If You Can Keep It
Let me start with the thing nobody on the left wants to admit, because admitting it means owning part of the catastrophe we're currently living through.
The Democrats did this.
Not entirely, not exclusively, and most probably, not intentionally, but they did it. They handed a fragile, exhausted, inflation-battered, trust-depleted electorate a candidate who couldn't complete a sentence, then spent the better part of a year insisting, with the kind of cheerful condescension that has become the party's signature mode, that everything was fine. The emperor had clothes. The president was sharp. The polls were wrong. And if you thought otherwise, you were probably a misogynist or a closet MAGA sympathizer or someone who just didn't appreciate the gravity of the moment.
The gravity of the moment. God, how many times did we hear that phrase. Whatever you think of Kamala Harris as a candidate, the party treated the democratic process itself as an inconvenience, and the voters noticed. You cannot spend four years lecturing the country about the sanctity of democracy and then quietly bypass the most basic democratic mechanism your own party has, and expect nobody to clock the contradiction. People are not as stupid as consultants think they are. They felt it, even when they couldn't name it. The whole thing had the texture of a con, and so here we are.
Here is what I think people are not saying clearly enough, and what I want to try to say here, without the usual liberal reassurance at the end that sends you back to your life feeling better than you should.
We are not watching a pendulum. We are watching a ratchet.
A pendulum swings back to where it started. A ratchet clicks forward and holds. Each cycle of this—Republican overreach, Democratic fecklessness, a donor class playing both sides, a political class too busy fundraising to govern—does not cancel the previous one out. It normalizes it. It moves the floor. It establishes, one administration at a time, that the limits of acceptable executive conduct are suggestions, that norms are for people who lack the nerve to ignore them, that the only thing that actually constrains power is the willingness of the person holding it to be constrained. And each time that willingness proves negotiable, it becomes more negotiable the next time around.
This is how republics die. Not in a single dramatic seizure but in a long sequence of individually survivable escalations, each one made possible by the one before, until the institutions that were supposed to constrain power have been so thoroughly hollowed out that they function mainly as furniture, useful for the appearance of legitimacy, easily rearranged by whoever happens to be in the room. The Romans watched this happen across roughly a century, from the violence of the late Republic through Caesar's crossing of the Rubicon to Augustus wrapping autocracy in the comfortable language of restoration. The forms of the old Republic persisted for decades. The Senate still met. The elections still happened. The vocabulary of democratic governance remained in circulation long after the thing it described had quietly left the building.
We are not Rome. But we are not exempt from the patterns that finished Rome, either.
What has followed the 2024 election has moved faster than most of us thought possible, because we underestimated Trump's second-term focus, because we forgot that four years of rage at losing makes for a very particular kind of preparation, and because we overestimated the institutional resistance that was supposed to slow him down. The first administration was chaos, a food fight, the gang that couldn't shoot straight, all those reassuring pieces in The Atlantic about how the bureaucracy would save us. The second administration is something altogether different. It is purposeful. It came with a plan. And it came with a list.
The loyalists are in. The skeptics are gone. And what has replaced the old chaos of the first term is something more unsettling than chaos, which is purpose. The agencies are being remade by unelected actors accountable to no one elected to authorize them. The stock market has lost trillions in weeks, small businesses are quietly pricing in the end of their margins, and the administration's response to all of it has been some variation of trust the plan. The courts are being probed for their actual limits rather than their theoretical ones. And when the Supreme Court ruled on tariff authority this week and the White House essentially shrugged and kept going, openly and without a hint of contrition, the question being posed to the rest of us was simple: and what exactly are you going to do about that?
Tuesday's State of the Union address, if you watched it, was clarifying, and menacing, in a way that these events rarely are. What you saw was a man who had stopped performing confidence and started performing dominance. There is a difference, and it matters. Confidence wants your buy-in. Dominance just wants your compliance. And a large enough portion of the country watches something like that and feels, in their chest before they can articulate it in their head, that the transaction on offer is no longer politics. It is something else, and that something else is very un-American.
We are watching, in something close to real time, the stress test of a two-hundred-and-fifty-year-old system designed by men who were brilliant about many things and wrong about a few critical ones. Chief among them being the assumption that future leaders would feel what George Washington felt, that almost physical discomfort with the appearance of kingship. Washington walked away from power twice and the world didn't know what to make of it. King George III said if he did it, he would be the greatest man alive. He meant it as a compliment. What he was actually describing was a man so anomalous that a monarch found him incomprehensible. The founders looked at that anomaly and decided it was a foundation. That future leaders would feel the same gravitational pull toward restraint, that the republic could run on conscience the way an engine runs on fuel. Shame, it turns out, is not a load-bearing wall.
Not because karma is real or because democracy always wins or because of any mystical faith in the American experiment. But because of something much more mundane. People who push too hard too fast tend to break things that cannot be so easily repaired, and the breaking makes noise, and the noise wakes people up. The only question that actually matters right now is whether enough people wake up in time, and whether, if they do, they understand clearly enough what went wrong to avoid building the next version of it on the same cracked foundation.
Here is the scenario I keep turning over. Not a prediction but a possibility, a thing worth thinking through because it illuminates what might actually be required.
Say the overcorrection happens. The midterms produce a Democratic House, maybe a Senate, on the strength of independent voters who showed up in numbers that surprised everyone, people who are not ideologically Democratic but who have decided that what they are watching is not the variety of conservatism they signed up for. That defection is already underway on the right, underreported and quietly gaining steam, in the places where people care more about their 401Ks and their kids' school districts than about owning the libs. Say the economy continues to underperform the promises. Say the tariff fights cost real people real money in ways they really feel at the grocery store and the car dealership. Say enough has happened fast enough that even some portion of the people who voted for disruption have started to wonder if this particular flavor of it is what they actually wanted.
And then say it holds through 2028. Say the Democratic primary produces someone who is not the establishment's choice, not a recycled name from the Pelosi-Schumer-Clinton era of sophisticated defeat, someone who runs explicitly on the thing nobody has been willing to run on directly—not left, not right, not red or blue, but on capital-D Democracy and the rule of law itself, the actual boring procedural unglamorous rule of law, which has somehow become the most radical possible platform.
That candidate wins. Narrowly, maybe. But wins.
And then the moment arrives. The most important moment in American political life in perhaps a century, and the one that will be most tempting to waste.
The incoming administration will find an executive branch systematically restaffed with loyalists and true believers, people loyal not to a party or an ideology in any coherent sense but to a person, to a method, to a way of operating that treats institutional norms as obstacles rather than architecture. They will be everywhere—in the agencies, in the military, in the intelligence apparatus, burrowed into career positions, doing what burrowed people do, which is wait.
The natural instinct—fully understandable, probably politically popular, and absolutely fatal— will be to do what was done to them. To retaliate. To purge. To restaff. To declare a mandate and use it. To be the blue version of exactly what just happened, because payback is emotionally satisfying and because there will be people whispering in the new president's ear that this is what the moment demands, that you cannot negotiate with what you are replacing, that half-measures will simply allow it to reconstitute. That instinct, followed, ends the American experiment as we know it.
Not dramatically. Quietly. With a press conference and a round of applause from people who should know better, while a nation watches and understands, somewhere below the level of words, that the last offramp just disappeared in the rearview mirror. The way things that have been dying for a long time finally die. Not with a bang, but with everyone in the room knowing and nobody saying so out loud.
Because what just broke is red, white, and blue legitimacy, credibility, covenant. The widespread, bipartisan, gut-level sense that the government is operating in some relationship to the consent of the governed. That sense, already strained and fraying before Trump, has been torn now in ways that a single election cannot repair. You do not restore it by winning and then governing as a conquering army with better values. The executive branch is now a weapon, and weapons do not become less dangerous simply because friendlier hands are holding them. You can paint the walls whatever color you like. The structure underneath remains.
Refusing to play the game means something that no serious professional politician will naturally want to hear. It means winning and then deliberately, structurally, publicly constraining your own power. Not as a thing you say at the inauguration and quietly shelve by February, but as the actual governing philosophy, the thing you are willing to be held to when it is inconvenient, when your side is screaming that the stakes are too high for restraint, when every political instinct you have is telling you that now is not the time.
It is always the time. That is rather the point.
And I want to pause here for a moment on what that actually costs. Because the argument for the bipartisan cabinet, for the genuine constraint of power, for the housecleaning that doesn't exempt your own side—that argument is easy to make in an essay and almost impossibly hard to live inside the actual moment. The new president will have just won. The base will be euphoric. The donors and the party faithful will have spent years in the wilderness and will arrive at the inauguration with lists of their own. Positions to fill, scores to settle, a turn that is finally, after everything, theirs. The temptation will not feel like temptation. It will feel like justice. It will feel like what you were elected to do. And the people urging restraint will look, in that room, in that moment, like people who don't understand what was at stake, who never really had skin in the game, who can afford the luxury of their principles.
That is precisely when it matters most. That is the only moment that counts.
What this looks like in practice is a genuinely bipartisan cabinet. And I want to be precise here, because "bipartisan" has become one of those words that means whatever the person using it needs it to mean, usually something like "we hired one Republican who already agreed with us." That is not what I am describing.
I am describing a structural commitment, made visible through actual appointments, that the loyalty test going forward is not to a person or a party but to the set of rules and institutions that make peaceful transitions of power possible. Republicans who broke with Trump not because they became Democrats but because they remained constitutionalists. Independents with genuine records of institutional fidelity. People from outside politics whose primary qualification is a demonstrated belief in something larger than their own advancement. The first question asked of every appointment would not be about healthcare or taxes or immigration. It would be simpler and more fundamental than that, the kind of question the founders assumed no one would ever need to ask: do you believe in this? The courts, the Congress, the separation of powers, the basic procedural agreements that the previous administration treated as optional. If yes, come in. We will fight about policy through proper channels. If no, you are not eligible, regardless of regardless of who you know and who you've carried water for.
History offers one instruction worth heeding. Lincoln's team of rivals was not a unity gesture—it was a cold-eyed recognition that governing a fracturing country required containing the fracture inside the tent rather than letting it organize outside it—a president who understood that the goal was not to win the argument but to survive it. Survival requires building. And building, in this case, begins with the thing Democrats will least want to hear.
The housecleaning cannot be selective. The Biden years were not clean. Not clean at all. The handling of the president's declining capacity was a prolonged act of institutional dishonesty that involved a lot of people who are still around, still influential, still telling themselves it was the right call. The party's relationships with certain donors and certain industries do not bear much scrutiny. There were failures and there were corruptions, and laundering them in the general relief of having survived Trump would be, beyond the moral problem of it, a catastrophic strategic error.
And if the housecleaning alone doesn't exhaust every ounce of political capital this new administration carries into office, what comes next certainly will. Because there is the other question, the one that cannot be deferred indefinitely no matter how much everyone in the room wishes it could. What do you do about the crimes? Not the policy disagreements, not the appointments that offended you, not the ideology you found repugnant but ultimately legal, but the things that were done in open daylight that are genuinely prosecutable. The defiance of court orders. The self-dealing. The corruption that didn't even bother to hide itself. The temptation will be to go hard, to finally hold people accountable in ways that previous administrations, including the last Democratic one, never had the nerve for. The counter-temptation, equally dangerous, will be to let it go in the name of healing. To pull a Ford, to decide that the cost of prosecution outweighs the cost of impunity.
Both paths lead somewhere bad. Impunity tells the next would-be autocrat that the risk-reward calculation works in their favor. And anything that looks like politically-motivated prosecution, regardless of the underlying merits, confirms every suspicion that the justice system is just another weapon that changes hands with the administration. The only credible path is the most difficult one to execute and the hardest one to sell: a genuinely independent accountability process, answerable to no one in the new administration, with a mandate that runs in both directions. Not a Democratic reckoning with Republican sins. A national reckoning with what we have collectively allowed, and what we owe each other if we intend to remain a republic rather than just call ourselves one. You want people to believe the system is capable of honest self-examination? Then examine it honestly, all of it, with the same aggression you bring to the other side's transgressions. Not as a concession to your opponents. As proof that you actually mean it.
I am aware of how naive this sounds. I am aware that I am describing a political figure who does not currently appear to exist, making choices that nothing in our current politics rewards or even recognizes, in a media environment that would cover the whole project as weakness or confusion or both. I know.
But we are at the place where naive is the only direction left that is actually interesting. The clever, sophisticated, savvy moves have all been made. Clever produced this. It's how you end up with a president-shaped placeholder and a vice president anointed in a back room and a party so terrified of its own base that it cannot say true things out loud. Clever-by-half is how you get here.
Naive, in this context, might just be another word for willing to do the thing that is necessary rather than the thing that is comfortable.
The ratchet only stops when someone decides to stop it. That decision will not come from the people who benefit from letting it run. It will not arrive as a revelation or a movement or a particularly stirring speech on the Senate floor. It will come, if it comes at all, from a president who looks at the weapon they have just inherited and decides, with full awareness of what they are giving up, to put it down. Not because it's popular. Not because the base is asking for it. Because it is the only move left that is not just a faster route to the same destination.
Every generation or so, the republic asks something genuinely hard of the people inside it. Not hard like a campaign is hard, not hard like a negotiation is hard, but hard like Washington-walking-away-from-the-army hard. Hard like the thing that made a king shake his head in disbelief. We are at one of those moments. And that new president will feel it standing in the Oval Office with a mandate in one hand and a choice in the other.
Put it down.
"A republic, if you can keep it."
Franklin said it walking out of the room where the whole thing was built, the ink barely dry, as if he already knew that the making was the easy part. He was right then. The question is whether we are finally ready to prove it now.
